We have all read local articles suggesting that Real Salt Lake is standing pat with their current roster. Sure there were a few garden variety trialists that showed up to rookie camp yesterday, but no signs of anything serious. Maybe we should take these articles at face value and assume that the roster we will see on opening day will be largely the roster we have today plus a little tweaking down at the bottom of the roster.
However, I have a hunch – not a terribly informed one, but one built in the context of a number of discussions and observations that I have had over the past couple of months, and even the past couple of years. This hunch tells me that there are often things percolating beneath the surface that we aren’t always aware of. This hunch tells me that there may be more to this story.
Here are a few of the more solid things that I can relate to you, much of the rest is “feeling” and “speculation” on my part:
1) Garth Lagerwey feels that the closer you get to the season the better values you can find. By necessity the team is a bargain shopper at this stage.
2) It’s also sometimes wise to let the current roster sort itself out. While this team has relatively little sorting out to do – a camp with Pablo Campos, Abe Thompson, Fabian Espindola, Nelson Gonzalez and a few rookies involved will reveal where they are each headed. There will be a natural sorting out that will occur over the next few weeks. Once that’s done, the needs (and particularly the magnitude of the needs) will become more apparent.
3) Negotiations can happen fast, or they can stretch out as both sides explore alternate options. The final resolution will occur when either side has a pressing need to bring the situation to closure. It’s possible that RSL has some options hovering around, but haven’t wanted to press the issue.
We all know about the recent extension of the CBA deadline to Feb 12th. Until the salary cap and other details are clarified a team like RSL might be unwise to make a move if their roster is mostly set. They may have only one option at a roster addition. To “overshoot” may require subsequent roster adjustments that have a negative impact if the cap is reduced. To “undershoot” is perhaps even more damaging, as you may locked into a lower level player than you could have had once an increased cap is in place.
So could RSL be standing pat with this roster? Sure. Could they have things in the works, but be waiting until the final details of the CBA are set before they act on them? That’s anybody’s guess, but my hunch tells me to bet on the latter.

I think they will stick with 2 goalkeepers this year and pick up another goalkeeper next year. With all the rumors of chesler going GA this last year I think they will wait until next draft and pick him up. Especially with him being a home town boy and he has already trained with them. They may even pick him up mid summer like they did with Bill Hamid at DC and that way he can be a GA goalkeeper but Real with get first dibs on him.

Was spending time in Argintina would have been a better way of making my comment but I think Kir knows that.
My point is, Everyone from Jason down has been talking about bringing in some help up front and I for one think we may need it.
Do you think this team will start the season with just 2 keepers?

Jason is not in Argentina. I saw him yesterday in fact. He was in Argentina prior to Christmas, and we know he was looking at a few players with Quilmes. RSL tried to get two young forwards from that club, but couldn’t land either of them. He likely looked at other players on that trip, but we don’t have any details of that.
We’ll have to see what develops. I’m approaching this with low expectations. I hope that I’m presently surprised.

If Jason is not looking to bring in a quality striker, why is he in Argintina? probably not just working on his tan!! and why is Lagerway constantly talking about bringing in a new forward?
Agree that Reynish is a quality back-up but RSL is going to be playing in more matches and we all remember last season when RSL was forced into playing their 3rd keeper.
Having said that I would much rather see a Striker being signed than a 3rd keeper.

Last year Beas was thinking of coming home primarily because things weren’t going well with the Rangers. He was riding the bench. He has had a recent resurgence (before his injury). It’s unlikely he’d make a move back to the States at this point, but you never know.

Somebody just firebombed his car in Scotland. I’d be very surprised if that was a “random accident” of some sort. That was one reason I thought he might be open to a return. Plus it might get him back into the mix with the national team if he cares about such a thing.
There was discussion last year that he was thinking about coming home. Not sure if it went any further than rumor mongering, but Bradley has shown a commitment to going with MLS guys, and DaMarcus has been in the doghouse for a while. Maybe it’s too late and he’d be 32 or so by the time the next World Cup comes around… but maybe he wants to make one last run at it. I dunno. Just throwing a name out there, and hoping at some point RSL goes for a DP.

Herculoid – it was indeed $175,000 which is big money in this league, but there are restrictions on how this money can be used. It can be used to pay transfer fees, and it can also be used to cover initial salaries. This most certainly will help. But will it make it simple to bring in an accomplished striker? Probably not. Depending on how you define “accomplished”, such a player is $200K+ in salary plus a significant transfer fee.
DeMarcus Beasley ain’t gonna happen, unless someone can explain why he’d want to leave Europe to come to the grandeur of MLS.

Oh, and one more thing… speaking of guys benching it in Europe… is there any chance RSL would make a play for DaMarcus B. for a year? He’s still not that old, and can play anywhere. I think he’d be an excellent replacement for Mathis, or he can play uptop if needed. Sure he is probably going to be expensive and isn’t the player he once was, but I’d pay to see the guy play, and I’m one of the people who didn’t renew their season tickets. So it might be worth exploring a “name” like that from a marketing standpoint.

I thought the allocation money they received for Seitz wasn’t just “some” money, but a TON of money in the grand scheme of things. Didn’t it give them upwards of 200 grand to bring somebody in? That’s no small potatoes, especially when you consider that it is like 3 times the salary of a guy like Espindola who had as much to do with the team’s success as about anybody else out there.
There are some very good options that are sitting the bench in Europe that could be had for that much money I’m sure.

Seitz was GA last season, so that doesn’t free up any salary cap space – although they did receive some allocation money to put toward a transfer fee or first year salary.
Abe Thompson takes up $63K, whereas Yura was $70K. So no real savings there. Mathis was $115K, but remember that Campos, and El Khalifi only had 1/2 years salary count against the team – so that will eat into that savings. Plus the efforts to re-sign Beckerman and Findley will require some salary cap space to be reserved for this effort.

georg, you forget that RSL used some of the cash from Seitz and Mathis trades to sure up Espy and other outstanding issues.
Reynish is fine for a backup, why did we have 3 anyways?
I’ve been reading about Kreis going to Argentina and are close to announcing a new striker from South America. Wrong?

No way does this team start the season with two keepers.
I cannot believe that this team would not try to replace Yura with a quality striker.
As I understand, RSL has money to spend, Seitz, Mathis, both left, leaving RSL some cash, I expect to see a fairly accomplised striker from Argintina to join the team soon.
“Or maybe I am just dreaming”
