The Boston Globe and WVHooligan are reporting that Real Salt Lake has landed 19 year-old US youth player, Sheanon Williams. Williams played 1 year of college ball at the University of North Carolina, and has been trying to find some traction with a European club but a foot injury has hampered his chances.
Williams is a 5’11″, 170 lb center back/right back (converted from forward) who is a graduate of the Bradenton Academy. He had a trial with VFB Wolfsburg and FC Twente last summer. He also reportedly turned down an offer from Hertha Berlin. He also was a member of the US U-20 entry in the recent U-20 World Cup, but reportedly had a poor performance there.
Williams is believed to have come to RSL via the discovery process.
Could Williams be trade bait for Luis Gil who went to the KC Wizards via the weighted lottery this afternoon? I doubt it, but stranger things have happened.
Stay tuned – more details to come.
UPDATE: Just received confirmation that Williams is in Casa Grande with the team. He arrived last night, replacing 4th round pick Kris Banghart who is no longer with the team. The official word is that he is “on trial”.
UPDATE #2: Sheanon apparently played left back at UNC, and right back with U-20′s. I read that he also played center back, and was even a forward early on at Bradenton. Hopefully we can sort out his projected position(s).

Sheanon was a center-back back at UNC and he did arrive late last night from Chicago. He has signed a contract with the MLS but his move to RSL isn’t concrete, they have an option to keep him if he performs during pre-season.
