No real news on Alvaro Saborio. Hopefully there will be some new information coming in the next day or so. However, here are some of my thoughts on the situation, that may give each of you a better idea of where this rumor really stands:
#1: The initial report linked RSL to Saborio based on an indication that RSL had sent a camera crew to a Saprissa practice. I think this is highly unlikely, it’s more likelythat a team like…the Sounders, would have been the ones to send a camera crew.
#2: The second wave of news reports came out with Saborio headed to the Sounders, but failed to give any sources to bolster the credibility, so it didn’t seem any more likely than the RSL rumors.
#3: … and yesterday afternoon there were reports from the Twitter account of Josh Mayers (from the Seattle Times) that stated “sounders fc will NOT be bringing costa rican int’l alvaro saborio to camp”. This information reportedly came via Sounders technical director Chris Henderson, but I have seen no confirmation of this. In an article by Mayers in the Seattle Times it contained the comment “not be in training this week,” which some speculated meant that he was indeed going to the Sounders.
#4: Later in the day reports out of Costa Rica included an interview with Saborio’s agent which reportedly indicated that they were in fact working on a deal with the Sounders.
#5: Finally the latest reports included comments from the agent that the Sounders had inquired about Saborio “some time ago”. While not conclusive, this could indicate that they were the first to the “discovery” trough.
#6: Another thing that is against the Sounders in this case is that they are looking at several strikers and several international players. They are expecting a Colombian striker in camp – Miguel Montaño and are expecting to sign him soon. They also reportedly are bringing in a young US forward, Ellis McLoughlin, from Hertha Berlin. Swiss forward Blaise Nkufo has also been linked to the club. They also have a Scottish midfielder in camp, Kevin Souter. The Sounders currently have 6 out of 8 international spots filled.
#7: Real Salt Lake declined to comment on the status of a discovery on the player.
#8: This player appears to be the real deal – a complete striker with good size, good feet, and good instincts. I have only seen him in a couple of Costa Rica matches, and really only remember him for his early goal against the US last summer. I think it could be a good get for RSL, but I’m not expecting it. It’s entirely possibly that its the Sounders, or another club entirely. Remember the initial reports last season had Escalada headed to the Red Bulls.
Hopefully we’ll find out more definitive information soon.

Yura started to shine for us at the end but we need more. With the schedule we have this year we need someone that shines already and brightly at that!

Thnks for keeping us posted KIR. Whether or not it is this guy I hope RSL is seriously looking at filling the spot Yura left behind.

Sure glad for this website and the news/reports supplied. Other sites RSL related are found wanting in my opinion.
