Collen Warner Joins Chris Schuler…in St. Louis

In case you haven’t noticed there is an ongoing theme with RSL this month. General Manager Garth Lagerwey has been hard at work trying to get some playing time for some of the younger players.  Goalkeeper Kyle Reynish has been in Charleston for a couple weeks now and is set to return next week.  Defender Chris Schuler went on loan with AC St. Louis last week, and will also be returning next week.   Now it looks like midfielder Collen Warner will be joining him.

The rookie out of Portland will only be gone until Monday as he catches up with Schuler in St. Louis for the rest of the week, however, according to a team spokesman it will ”get him a couple of games.”  St. Louis plays two games at home this week: tonight against Portland and against Minnesota on Sunday.   Those games are important at this time of the season, as all three of those players will likely play a significant role once RSL begins Champions League play on August 18th.  It’s likely that RSL will play a mixture of established vets and younger players in both Champions League action and league play during the busy stretch which extends from mid-August through mid-October.

Postcards From Camp: Collen Warner

Here is the final installment of Postcards From Camp.  We’d like to thank the RSL staff for helping coordinate this, and thanks to rookie Collen Warner.  After spending time carrying bags after practice, he still was able to put together his thoughts on this week in Charleston.  Thanks Collen!  Enjoy…

Hello Real Salt Lake fans!

As we finish up our second week of training camp in South Carolina, I wanted to take this opportunity to fill you in on our progress. After a successful outing against Charleston Battery, Coach Kreis decided to give us a light training day. We started out by taking a scenic jog near our hotel. Afterwards, the team headed towards the College of Charleston who has generously allowed us to take advantage of their facilities. After a light lift we walked around the campus taking in the sights.

Double Talk – It’s BACK!!!

Many of you are familiar with the trailblazing RSL fansite, AYL Soccer.  Unfortunately AYL has been dormant for a while at least partially due to the relocation of one of the founding members.  I can honestly say that I learned a lot from the guys at AYL, and in particular Eric Salsbery (aka Deuce).

If you followed AYL at all you know that there was a lot of great content there which was important during RSL’s formative years.  There were two can’t miss segments in particular – the weekly podcast, and Double Talk.  There has been some whispering that AYL may try to resurrect the podcast this season.  I’d love to see this happen.

I’m also happy to report that the creative mind behind Double Talk, Jacob Hart, is joining Keepin’ It Real for this season.  He’ll be doing some video work, some writing, and just in general sharing his creative thoughts. He’ll also be producing some segments of Double Talk.  Welcome aboard Jake!

Here is the first one featuring David Horst and Collen Warner:

EDIT: For all of the past versions of DoubleTalk visit AYL Soccer or the Zorilla Studios Youtube channel.

Keepin’ It Real has an interview setup for tomorrow afternoon with Real Salt Lake’s first round draft pick, midfielder Collen Warner.

We’re planning on the interview being the video variety so that you get the full effect of his answers.

What would you like to know about the player?  Any questions you have about his game?  Other aspects of his soccer career?

What would you like to know in order to get to know the player better?

Let us know what’s on your mind, and we’ll try to accommodate your questions.

Some Feedback/Insight on RSL’s Draft Selections

Jeff Carlisle’s analysis of RSL’s first round trade and pick:

15. Real Salt Lake — Collen Warner, M, Portland

RSL created an odd end to the first round by shipping Clint Mathis to Los Angeles, swapping picks with the Galaxy, and getting a third-round selection next year. Evidently that was needed to acquire Warner, whose stock rose considerably at the combine, and could give the champs more of a classic wide presence on the right side of midfield.

Additional comment by JR, “College Soccer Professor” from Goal.com’s draft coverage:

LA traded their pick and a pick next year for Clint Mathis and RSL’s pick. I like Collen Warner. I think he fill an outside mid spot on that team.

Ives Galarcep’s comments on Schuler and Warner:

18. New York Red Bulls- CHRIS SCHULER, D, Creighton

Another big and confident centerback for the Red Bulls, Schuler quietly impressed at the Combine and his 6-foot-4, 200 pound frame should help New York’s awful back-line.

19. San Jose Earthquakes- COLLEN WARNER, M, Portland

One of the draft’s true sleepers, Warner comes from a small school but has impressive skill and can play on the right wing or centrally.

Real Salt Lake Trades Mathis & Picks Collen Warner

warnercolleniq8

Real Salt Lake has traded Clint Mathis and their 1st round pick (#16) to the LA Galaxy for the LA Galaxy’s 1st round pick (#15) and their 3rd round pick in 2011.

With the #15 pick, Real Salt Lake selected Collen Warner, the 21 year-old midfielder/forward from the University of Portland.  He can play the right wing or centrally. Warner was thought of as a potential “sleeper” pick, but was often listed in

JJMMHCve

the middle to the end of the second round.  The website, Pro Player Pipeline, had him ranked as the #13 player overall.

Mathis has had a strong relationship with Galaxy manager Bruce Arena, through his time with the USMNT and with the New York Red Bulls.

Mathis had also settled in Southern California prior to coming to Real Salt Lake.

Warner was recently described as quick and dangerous, with a good passing touch.  He trained with the Liverpool Youth Academy.

Warner finished this season at Portland with 9 goals and 7 assists.
