KIR SCOUTING REPORT

There is very little that we have been able to glean about Gonzalez’ game to this point based on first hand observation.  He has looked good in training sessions.  He looks very good technically, has a motor that won’t quit, and is aggressive fighting for the ball.  But that’s on the training pitch.

During the 2009 season, fans saw Nelson play in two exhibition matches.  In the first against BYU, he reportedly had an excellent match including a goal scored in the 49th minute.  However, he looked somewhat out-of-place while playing next to Javier Morales in the first half against Chivas Guadalajara.  You could see technical skill there, but he seemed hesitant.

From an interview with Gonzalez, he claims that he is either a left-sided midfielder or central midfielder.  Watching him, he seems like a good fit for the left-side of the diamond which is where he played in the Chivas exhibition.  He feels like he is a very fast player who has good touch, can hold the ball in the midfield, and deliver “some good balls to Fabi”.

Jason Kreis described him as “a no-nonsense kid, he’s a hard-worker, and had a real strong mentality”.  He also mentioned that he can play left-wing, left-back and holding midfield.

In December 2009, Garth Lagerwey told KIR this about Gonzalez, “Nelson has plenty of talent. He’s capable of getting in the mix, and capable of potentially earning a starting spot in preseason.”
