Dortmund Beat Mainz on Matchday 9, Remain in Second Spot
Following a few losses during this season, Borussia Dortmund returned to their winning ways by beating Mainz quite easily during the Matchday 9 of the Bundesliga.
In summing up the game, Michael Zorc, the Dortmund sporting director said, “We had our problems in the first half and made our life difficult at the second half. We should have scored the second goal earlier.”
While Reus scored a beauty in the 18th minute, he missed converting a penalty to take Dortmund up by two goals to nil. Also, Mainz almost scored through Yoshiniro Muto if not for a brilliant save by Burki.
Yet again the hosts continued to pressure the Dortmund defense with a fantastic set-piece from Jairo that was barely kept out by Burki again.
As for the penalty kick mentioned earlier, Aubemayang was brought down in the Mainz 18-yard box by Niko Bungert in the 47th minute. But Reus was to miss and the visitors still could not get that ‘goal cushion.
It was only in the closing minutes of play that Dortmund finally got that goal, thanks to a mispass by Brosinski that allowed Aubemayang to pass the ball to Mkhitaryan for the winner.
This was Dortmund’s first win after four consecutives game that went winless while Mainz lost their fifth game in all during this Bungesliga season.
What this win means is that Dortmund remains in second spot in the Bundesliga while Schalke takes the third.
Alternatively, Mainz, with this loss, has dropped from 8th to 9th place in the Bundesliga table standings.
