Was Lionel Messi Better This Season Or In 2009?

Given that both 2009 and 2014 are years that Messi has outdone himself yet again, it’s a valid question to ask which Messi is better.

 

With Barcelona on the verge of winning a treble this season, and La Liga already done and dusted with, it was Messi who came up with the goal that saw them home as they beat Atletico Madrid and a game to spare.

 

Alternatively, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat trick against Espanyol but it wasn’t enough as Barca was four points clear and which meant that they could lose a game.

 

Having said that, this is the fifth La Liga title in seven years and the first for Luis Enrique. If that’s not enough, FC Barcelona will play Athletic Bilbao in the Copa Del Rey as well as Juventus on June 6 for the Champions League trophy.

 

Diego Simeone, manager of Atletico Madrid, summed it up best, in saying, “In the moment when game was most under control, a piece of genius from Lionel appeared. Although it was also a defensive slip from us, but it was a great goal which made them more comfortable in the game. They then did not need to attack. Above all the image that we were competing, and just beaten by piece of genius from Messi.”

 

And even though most football pundits believe that Messi is at his absolute best now, it wouldn’t matter much to Barca fans given that they’ve had the pleasure of witnessing Messi’s magic throughout these years.
